Kodak Instamatic family list

Going through my camera shelves, I have done two #126 format cameras, the Dacora Instacora and the Ricoh 126 C Automatic. Going from there to the Kodak Instamatics, I realized that there are more than what I bargained for. Koddak made just under Instamatic models, so enclosed is the list

The Instamatic was made to be the easiest camera to use, just drop the #126 cartridge in, close the back and shoot. There were hardly any settings; most models had daylight and flash modes. Later, Kodak added trimmings, such as a lever winder, shutter and aperture selection, light meter, focusing lens and spring-loaded models. Further, Kodak made this camera in the US, its home market, Canada, Germany, the UK, Brazil, and Argentina. It could well be the best-selling camera style of all time.

Kodak used the same format for two SLR models and two cameras under the Retina name and probably looked into extending the offering to a sophisticated user base. I believe that the main advantage of this format, being simple load, could not sustain a chance against the prevailing 35mm format cartridge, especially when most manufacturers offered easy load features.

Other manufacturers followed with compatible cameras and film cartridges, will list them in a different post.

The Instamatic #126 format paved the way to the #110, a smaller format, which allowed for a long line of pocket-size cameras by Kodak and other makers.

Compared to the number of units sold, very few cameras are changing hands on eBay. Moreover, what is sold fetches little money, often less than the shipping cost. Click on the value field on the table below to see the average value and quantity sold of recent transactions.

Much information about the Kodak Instamatic models is offered online, where all I added is a searchable, condensed table to show the models. Amongst others, thanks to Kodak Classics and Collection Appareils, to which I referred for more information.
